Title: Evidence of cross-boundary use and reuse of digital educational resources

Abstract: In this study we conducted an investigation on the server-end log-files of teachers’ Collections of educational resources in a number of content platforms. Our goal was to find empirical evidence from the field that teachers use and reuse learning resources that are in a language other than their mother tongue and originate from different countries than they do. We call these cross-boundary learning resources. We compared the cross-boundary reuse of educational resources to the general reuse figure of 20%, and find that it was either equal to or less than the general reuse. We further studied the coverage, the overlap and the pick-up rate of these resources, and propose steps that could improve the probability of discovery, use and reuse of cross-boundary resources.

Abstract: This special issue brings together the top ranked academic papers that were presented at the Portfolio2007 conference in Maastricht in October 2007. The central theme for 2007 was “Employability and Lifelong Learning in the Knowledge Society”. The papers in this selection span a fairly wide spectrum of usage situations in lifelong learning, ranging from formal education, through in-service teacher training for special education to the employability of older adults. Taken together, the usage situations illustrate the inclusive potential of ePortfolio usage. The papers also cover different stages in the research process, ranging from a well-argued research design, through cutting edge technological additions, evaluations of pilots in actual practice to a critical reflective contribution on the assumptions underlying the discourse on employability. The academic track was co-organised by the TENCompetence consortium (http://www.tencompetence.org/).

Title: Netwerken voor lerende professionals

Abstract: Ons onderwijs is van oudsher heel sterk gericht op kinderen en jong-volwassen, mensen die een initieel, vaak verplichte traject van onderwijs en scholing doormaken. Langzamerhand is duidelijk aan het worden, mede door de opgang die de kennismaatschappij doet, dat we daarmee niet kunnen volstaan. Werkende professionals, hebben ook leerbehoeften waarin moet worden voorzien, en datzelfde geldt voor allerlei mensen die zich persoonlijk willen ontwikkelen, buiten de context van vak en beroep. We kunnen in die behoefte alleen voorzien door radicaal afscheid te nemen van de instituties, gebruiken en gewoonten die we voor het initiële traject gebruiken; en door een doorlopende leerlijn te trekken van leren als kind, via leren als jong-volwassene naar leren voor beroep, hobby, tijdverdrijf. Dit concept van een leven lang leren, zo betoogt deze oratie, kan het beste gestalte krijgen in een nieuwe organisatievorm, dat van een leernetwerk. Het steunt in belangrijke mate op de verworvenheden van een andere, recente ontwikkeling in onze cultuur, die van de netwerkmaatschappij. Uitgewerkt wordt hoe leernetwerken gestructureerd zijn, wat de rol van competenties erin is en wat voor instrumentatie nodig is.
